What is Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance is a contract a person buys to provide financial protection against physical damage or bodily injury damage that results from a traffic collision they have been found liable for.

The state of Wisconsin requires that anyone with a valid driver’s license maintain a minimum amount of insurance.

Customers may also purchase additional financial protection for additional causes of loss that are associated with owning a vehicle- above and beyond being able to pay out funds to “the other guy” in an at-fault accident.

Examples include:
  • Medical Payments coverage, which provides treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of your vehicle in an accident.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage which assists you if you or a passenger in your vehicle are injured during an accident involving a hit-and-run driver or a driver who does not have insurance (uninsured) -or- with a driver who has insurance, but only purchased a very minimal policy and the policy has paid out the maximum amount, leaving you with additional medical bills (underinsured).
  • Damage to your vehicle:
    • Collision Coverage is a coverage you would purchase if you want to receive financial assistance to repair or replace your vehicle in the event that you / listed driver on the policy are driving the insured vehicle and you collide with something.
      • Examples: Tree, snowbank, another vehicle, light pole
    • Comprehensive Coverage is a coverage you would purchase if you want to receive financial assistance to repair or replace your vehicle in the event that it is damaged due to a cause that is something “other than collision”.
      • Examples:  Animals (ie. Jumping into vehicles- such as deer) -or- chewing engine wires, hail, tree limbs falling, fire, theft, vandalism
  • Extras: Then there are extra coverages that tend to be available depending on which insurance company you are applying with.  Some (not limited to) examples are:
    • Transportation Expense / Car Rental Coverage- you can purchase this coverage so that if your vehicle is in the body shop being fixed because of a claim, you can get a rental car.  Many companies will also substitute reimbursement for cabs, public transportation, Uber, etc.
    • Transportation Network Company Coverage- is what you need to add to your policy if you drive for companies like Uber or Lyft so that you have insurance during the period of time when your app is turned on (ie. You are “for hire”) but you have not actively selected a job.  Otherwise, this period of time, while you have started work (turned on the app) but not started your first “task”, you would have zero insurance (not your personal policy nor the company insurance).  Make sure you talk to your insurance agent about this if it applies to you.
    • Loan/Lease Gap Coverage- if you have a loan on your vehicle, you may want to consider purchasing your GAP coverage through your insurance company rather than the finance company.  The difference in price is dramatic.

** NOTE: Generally, you would receive the best benefit for insurance company GAP insurance if you are not rolling over a previous loan.  If you are rolling over a previous loan, before selecting the best GAP coverage, compare the policy language.

What is Classic Auto Insurance?

Classic Car insurance is similar to regular car insurance but with the added benefits of having a team of experts in the classic auto field.  Additionally, since most classic cars are not daily drivers, the insurance is often less expensive.

Why classic auto insurance?
No one knows classic cars and their owners better than insurance companies that specialize in the classic car space.  Not only do the teams of claims reps and underwriters know what your vehicles mean to you- this filters all the way down to the customer service team members, who in most cases, receive classic car training. In fact, hopefully, you will never have a claim, but if you do- when you work with claim adjusters who specialize in classic cars- they are also able to source high-quality replacement parts easier than a “regular” car insurance carrier.

Guaranteed Value coverage- You tell us the value of your classic and we’ll affirm that it’s a fair, accurate number. Then, we guarantee that value will be paid to you in the event of a covered total loss.** Period.

Regular car insurance carriers offer “actual cash value” or “stated value” coverage, which may depreciate your vehicle in the event of a claim, resulting in a smaller payout than you anticipate.

Guaranteed Flatbed Towing- Regular car insurance roadside coverage may not be able to guarantee a flatbed tow truck that can handle your classic with the proper care it needs.  Classic car insurance guarantees flatbed towing with soft straps, battery jumps, lockouts, and other value-adds.

Who qualifies?

There are several factors that qualify drivers and vehicles for Classic Auto Insurance, including:

Model year
  • Classic, collector vehicles 1980 or older
  • Collector truck / SUV 1998 or older
  • Hot Rods / Street Rods 1950 or older

Usage
  • Generally, use your collector vehicle for club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and even occasional pleasure driving—it just can't be your daily driver.

Driver eligibility
  • Most classic car insurance companies are not able to offer coverage if you have had a serious infraction (alcohol-related offense, reckless driving, excessive speed) in the last three years.

Storage
  • Generally, insurance companies prefer that collector vehicles are stored in an enclosed, secure structure when not in use—such as a private garage, pole barn or storage unit.  They will consider other storage such as carports, driveways, parking garages, car hauling trailers- depending on the individual situation.

Household regular use vehicles
  • Since the insurance company requires that the classic vehicle they are insuring is not a daily driver, usually they will want to see that there is a reasonable amount of regular-use vehicle(s) for daily driving for the number of household members that have valid driver's licenses

We can also insure

  • Non-street legal race cars and motorcycles
  • Antique trailers
  • Military vehicles
  • Retired commercial vehicles
  • Motorcycles and Scooters
  • Vintage camper trailers
  • Boats and Yachts
  • Classic and antique trailer

Vehicles that usually do not qualify

Because we provide low-cost, Guaranteed Value® coverage, we are not able to provide coverage for certain vehicles due to how they are used and the increased risk associated.
  • Off-road or recreational vehicles
  • Daily-use vehicles
  • Commercial-use vehicles
  • Motorcycles with performance modifications

Recreational Products Insurance?

Insurance for your recreational products will provide you with financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from collisions and against liability that could also arise from the use or storage of your vehicle.

There are a large number of vehicle types that fall under this type of policy.
  • Motorcycle / Sport Bike / Touring Bike / Trike
  • Dirt Bike / Off-Road
  • Moped / Scooter
  • ATV / UTV / Side by Side
  • Snowmobiles
  • Segways
  • Golf Carts
  • E-bike

Recreational Vehicle Insurance Coverages

There are several different types of motorcycle insurance coverages.

The policy contract starts with protecting you if you are liable to others in the event of a covered loss.  The selected amount (by the customer) of money that the contract will pay up to is the first option on everyone’s policy.

Then you have additional coverages that may be available to you, such as:
  • Accessory Coverage - Covers loss, theft, or damage to motorcycle accessories like saddlebags, custom handlebars, and OEM electronics.
  • Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage - Covers physical damage or loss of the motorcycle that is not the direct result of a moving vehicle collision.
  • Collision Coverage - Pays for damage to an insured motorcycle when it hits or is hit by another car or object, or if the motorcycle overturns.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage - Pays damages for bodily injury or death resulting from an accident for which you are at fault and provides you with a legal defense. This includes passengers riding on your motorcycle.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage - Pays damages for physical damage resulting from an accident for which you are at fault and provides you with a legal defense.
  • Medical Payments Coverage - Pays medical expenses of the parties riding on the motorcycle involved in a motorcycle accident.
  • Personal Injury Protection Coverage - This is an extension of motorcycle insurance available in some states that covers medical expenses and, in some cases, lost wages and other damages.  PIP is designed to be paid without regard to legal liability.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage -  Provides for a motorcycle operator to receive damages for any injury he or she receives from an uninsured, negligent driver. The coverage pays the difference between what the uninsured or underinsured driver can pay and what the injured operator would be entitled to as if the uninsured motorist had proper insurance
  • Motorcycle Roadside Assistance Coverage - Roadside assistance and breakdown coverage assist operators whose motorcycle has suffered a mechanical failure that leaves the operator stranded.
  • Rental Vehicle Coverage- (All coverages from the policy will transfer to the rental or loaner vehicle for no extra premium (does not pay for a rental car)
  • Safety Riding Apparel Coverage- In the event of a covered loss, the policy may provide for helmets, eye wear, gloves, jacket, leathers, and boots.

What is Boatowners Insurance?

Boat insurance protects a boat, its owner, and passengers in the event of a loss. Boat insurance can include all motorized water vehicles including, but not limited to, fishing boats, pontoon boats, yachts, and jet skis.

Depending on the policy you select, you may be able to purchase an Agreed Value (AV) policy or an Actual Cash Value (ACV) policy.  The Agreed Value (AV) policy will pay the value listed on your declaration page if you have a total loss, while the ACV policy will calculate for depreciation.

Boating Insurance Coverages
  • Liability Coverage - pays for injuries and property damage to others as a result of a covered accident in which you are found to be legally liable. This may include pollution liability and wreckage removal depending on your policy.
  • Water Sports Coverage- covers bodily injury or property damage caused by persons operating a covered vehicle for water sports such as water skiing, knee boarding, or tubing.
  • Collision Coverage - pays for damages to your boat, motor, trolling motor, trailer along with the permanent and some portable boating equipment as a result of a covered accident with another boat or object.
  • Comprehensive Coverage - covers damages to your boat, motor, trolling motor, trailer and some permanent and portable boating equipment that are the result of events other than collision. For example, this can include damage from fire, theft or storms.
  • Uninsured or Underinsured Boater Coverage - Covers the insured for damages and bodily injury that you and any passenger of your boat sustain if injured in a covered accident involving an uninsured or underinsured boater and also in some cases a hit-and-run boater.
  • Medical Payments - Cover medical expenses for the treatment of injuries that are incurred by you or your boat passengers while operating or occupying your boat.
  • On-Water Towing and Labor Coverage - This coverage option pays for towing expenses and other emergency services up to pre-defined limits in the event your boat becomes disabled on the water.
  • Fishing Equipment Coverage - Specific coverage to help pay for damage to fishing equipment while on your insured boat or while being carried onto or off of your insured boat.
  • Personal Effects Coverage - pays replacement cost for damages or losses of your personal property while onboard or while being carried onto or off of your insured boat.

What is RV Insurance?

RV Insurance coverage is designed for most recreational vehicles, including motor homes, travel trailers, horse, utility, and cargo trailers valued under $500,000.

Motor homes must have a drinkable water supply system and a permanently installed cooking, sleeping, and plumbed-in bathroom facilities to be considered.

Travel trailers and campers (non-motorized, portable units -or- trailers kept at one location) must be manufactured by a licensed manufacturer.  Home manufactured units are not acceptable.

Horse, utility and cargo trailers are acceptable if they are non-motorized vehicles that are intended to be towed and used to carry horses or personal belongings (ie. Toy hauler).

Specialized RV coverage provides the features specific to the needs of an RV owner like contents coverage

Trailers (pulled behind) and campers (mounted) – do not require bodily injury liability coverage because while they are on the road being pulled- if they cause damage to another vehicle, they are covered under the insurance policy of the vehicle that is towing them.

An RV that drives itself does need liability coverage.
  • Bodily injury liability - for injuries the policyholder causes to someone else.
  • Property damage liability - for damage the policyholder causes to someone else’s property.
  • Medical payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - for treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car.
  • Un- and Under-insured motorists coverage - for costs resulting from an accident involving a hit-and-run driver or a driver who does not have insurance.

Regardless, you may want to have protection for the vehicle itself.  Whether it is on the road or sitting amongst the trees.
  • Collision - for damage to the policyholder’s car from a collision.
  • Comprehensive - for damage to the policyholder’s car not involving a collision with another car (including damage from animals, hail, mother nature, and theft.

Additionally, you would want to consider insuring:
  • Contents Coverage - Covers damage or loss of the contents of the recreational vehicle. Contents coverage is typically purchased at a set amount not to be exceeded in a claim payout.
  • Roadside- sends a tow truck that specializes in RVs for help on the spot to tow to the nearest RV repair facility.
  • Roof Insurance- provides coverage to repair or replace the vehicle’s roof if it malfunctions, even if the cause is wear and tear. This coverage also includes damage to other parts of the vehicle caused directly by the roof’s malfunction.

What is Roadside Assistance?

Roadside assistance and breakdown coverage are services that assist motorists, or bicyclists, whose vehicles have suffered a mechanical failure that leaves the operator stranded.

Types of Assistance That Are Typically Covered
Although there are many different available options and services with our roadside assistance plans and every type of roadside assistance plan includes different options, roadside assistance coverage typically provides protection for:

  • Mechanical Breakdown
  • Flat Tire Change
  • Battery Jump Start
  • Emergency Fuel & Fluid Delivery
  • Locksmith Service

In addition to being able to add roadside assistance to auto insurance policies, you can also purchase a Motorclub membership.

Sage Insurance Group proudly represents AAA, an award-winning motorclub service.

Using a separate roadside membership for situations like a tow instead of your auto insurance avoids opening an insurance claim.
